Sanskrita.org uses Unicode to display Sanskrit words. Correct visualization of these pages depends on: 1) your operating system, 2) your browser and 3) their respective setup. This page contains instructions to help you set them up correctly.
Font Specifications and Notes. Source: Bundled with the Omkarananda Ashram's Itranslator 2003 utility. Sanskrit 2003 is also separately available for free download from the Omkarananda Ashram's website. A donation to the Ashram is suggested. Stats: Sanskrit 2003 Version 1.05 (August 22, 2004) has 1,608 glyphs and no kerning pairs. Hence special PostScript and TrueType versions of the 'Sanskrit 99' font were made for those Mac users, who use non-OTF-savvy word progams, e.g. Appleworks (Clarisworks), and/or who use an older version of the Macintosh operating system (e.g. Mac OS 8.6 etc.). Two Mac font versions of the Windows font 'Sanskrit 99' are available. Sanskrit Italic Font. This is italic Version of Regular Sanskrit Font. Use this to emphasis the section of your text. To test if your computer is set up correctly, compare the two words written in Sanskrit text below. One is an image and the other is text interpreted by your computer:

If you see approximately the same thing, then you are ready to browse this site, and you don't need to carry on reading this page. If you can't read Devanāgarī text on the second line, then keep reading. We have gathered some tips that with any luck will allow you to read Devanāgarī. If none of these tips works, try here.
Mac OS X 10.4 & 10.5
FireFox (3) should display Devanāgarī texts properly.
Safari should display Devanāgarī texts properly.
Opera may also work but usually has some bugs.
FireFox (1.5 - 2) may be helped by installing the following plugin here where it says 'Mozilla Update', although it continues to have some bugs.
Linux
FireFox (3) should display Devanāgarī texts properly.
Windows 95, 98, ME & NT
If you use any of these Operating Systems, you unfortunately don't have support for Devanāgarī.
Using Internet Explorer, you could try updating the browser here.
Windows 2000
FireFox (3) should display Devanāgarī texts properly. If you can't read Devanāgarī, try enabling the 'Complex Text Support' manually:
- * Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Regional Options > General (Tab).
- * In the 'Language settings for this system' frame, check the box next to 'Indic'.
- * Copy the appropriate files from the Windows 2000 CD when prompted.
- * If prompted, reboot your computer once the files have been installed.
Windows XP & Server 2003
You shouldn't have any problems. We recommend you use Firefox 3. Otherwise try the latest Internet Explorer version. If you can't read Devanāgarī, try enabling the 'Complex Script Languages' files manually:
- * Go to Start > Control Panel.
- * If you are in 'Category View' select the icon that says 'Date, Time, Language and Regional Options' and then select 'Regional and Language Options'.
- * If you are in Classic View select the icon that says 'Regional and Language Options'.
- * Select the 'Languages' tab and make sure you select the option saying 'Install files for complex script and right-to-left languages (including Thai)'. A confirmation message should now appear - press 'OK' on this confirmation message.
- * Allow the OS to install necessary files from the Windows XP CD and then reboot if prompted.
Windows Vista
You shouldn't have any problems. We recommend you use Firefox 3. Otherwise try the latest Internet Explorer version.
